ARE YOU  PREPARED TO EVACUATE?

Government Emergency Plans assume all households will be prepared to take care of themselves and their families in the event of an emergency or disaster for up to 3 days.

Prepare all family members to know:

*How to keep in touch with everyone in your family if they can’t get home or if the phone is out
*Have a designated meeting place:1) in neighbourhood, example in case of fire 2) outside your area in case you can’t return home. Everyone must know address and phone number of contact person
*Develop plans for what to do if………….

  • Plan how to take care of your pets

  • Where the emergency survival kit is kept (supplies for up to 3 days for each family member in duffle bag or camping backpack ready to go at a moment’s notice: flashlight
with extra batteries, radio, first aid kit, non-perishable food, bottled water, change of clothing and shoes, waterproof matches, manual can opener, sleeping bag or blanket,
whistle, recent photo of every family member, eyeglasses, medications in original bottles, sanitation & hygiene items, photocopies of important documents - SIN, proof of residence,
birth and marriage certificate, insurance policy)

  • Show each family member how & when to turn off the utilities (water, electricity) at the main switch. Only turn off natural gas if local officials advise.

  • Know where to seek shelter from all types of hazards

If authorities ask you to leave your home, they have a good reason for making that request and you should heed their advice immediately.

  • Listen to local radio/T.V.

  • Wear long sleeved shirts, pants, and sturdy but comfortable walking shoes

  • Take your emergency survival kit

  • Take a cellular phone with you

  • Bring your driver’s licence or personal ID, SIN card, debit card, credit card

  • Bring extra cash including coins or cards for payphones

  • Lock your home

  • Use travel routes specified by authorities

  • Return home only when safe to do so
