The Foundation For Rural Living

The Foundation for Rural Living (FRL), www.frl.on.ca  founded in 1979, is a registered charity.  Our mission is to advance the rural non-profit and voluntary sector and build sustainable rural capacity to enhance the quality of life for rural citizens. Various programs and partnership endeavours aim to advance the role and interests of the voluntary and non-profit sector for the benefit of rural communities.

One of FRL’s key programs is the Rural Philanthropy Resource Network (the Network): The rationale for the Network is based on findings from formal research conducted by FRL and Imagine Canada that discusses and identifies the capacity challenges of rural non-profit and voluntary organizations.

Foundation for Rural Living and our partners have established the Network to provide rural individuals, non-profit organizations and communities with the knowledge, training, and support needed to successfully expand community investment and sustain quality non-profit and voluntary programs.

Our Virtual Learning and Resource Centre: www.ruralphilanthropy.ca A key element in community capacity building is the development of a shared resource that recognizes small rural non-profits do not have the threshold or capacity to create elaborate structures.  However, in order to be competitive in fundraising and management, resources and investment are necessary.

The Virtual Learning and Resource Learning Centre features a variety of training programs, resources, links and technical services to advance fundraising and management.  The intent is not to duplicate resources, but rather filter, identify and build on those existing opportunities which are most relevant to rural communities and then make them readily available.  Tools and resources include the following:

Library: searchable database of resource and live “Ask A Librarian” feature.

Media Centre: templates, toolkits and resources in the field of communicatio

Learning Centre: live online training sessions, using the latest e-learning technology.

The Rural Development Officer Internship Program: The placement of a team of Rural Development Officers (RDO’s) in rural non-profit and voluntary agencies at the community or regional level is a key element in the Network.  Working with direction from the ‘host’ organization, support from FRL’s Virtual Learning and Resource Centre and with senior mentoring and supervision; the RDO’s serve in a variety of capacities including research, community assessment and development.
