SELF-STUDY
COURSES
The
staff at the QUEST Centre will be happy to guide you
through the process if your goal is to earn your high
school diploma or complete a high school credit. Whether
you need a diploma to qualify for employment, to prepare
for college courses or simply for peace of mind, there is
a sense of pride and achievement gained. Yes it is a big
commitment, takes a lot of dedication and will power, but
it can be done. At the QUEST Centre we also have
information on how to attain your GED: General Educational
Development, which is a testing program for adult high
school equivalency.
We
offer credit correspondence courses through the Thames
Valley District School Board continuing education program. Correspondence allows you to learn at your own pace
while in the comfort of your own home. The only traveling
to be done is dropping off your completed lessons and
picking up you next set of lessons.
The following are guidelines for
taking correspondence courses through the QUEST Centre:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You cannot be a full-time student. If
you are attending high school part-time, you must
get a letter from the principal stating that you
are part-time and given permission for the student
to take correspondence.
- Bring your School Transcript (which you
request from the high school you last attended)
and any other school certificates you have to the
QUEST Centre. To obtain your transcript if you
attended GDHS after October 2000, you can obtain a
transcript from the Guidance Office. If you
attended school in the Thames Valley area, but
have been out of school 5 or more years, you’ll
need to contact Wheable (452-2660 ext 271). If you
went to school under a different school board, you
need to contact that school board to find out how
to get transcripts. The website: www.oise.utoronto.ca/canedweb/edboards.hotml
has links to all the school boards in Canada.
- Fill out an ILC Pre-Registration Form
giving reasons / Future goals for taking
correspondence courses. We will fax all relevant
information to the Adult learning Centre in St.
Thomas. Once your assessment has been faxed back
we will call you.
- Come in and fill out the Registration
Form and pick up your first set set of lessons.
The fee for your first course is $50 cash or
cheque ($40 will be refunded when you have
completed your course). $100 cash deposit is you
require a textbook ($100 will be refunded when you
return the textbook). You will be charged $10 for
each subsequent course. You are required to
complete all Unit Questions for complete marks;
this includes Key Questions and Support Questions.
Please write legibly on regular lined paper. Typed
work is welcomed. All courses must be completed
within one year from the date of registration.
- A one-credit self-study course will
require the completion of 20 lessons and a final
exam: Students must pass the exam to receive the
credit. Each course is divided into lesson books
of 4 or 5 lessons. You may hand in one lesson or
up to fove lessons at a time. Upon completion,
return the lesson book and exchange it for the
next lesson book. Teacher/markers do not mark
during July and August and during Christmas or
March Break. Indicate clearly the lesson number,
course code (eg. ENG3U) and your name on lessons
to be marked. Please allow 4-5 weeks for marked
lessons to be returned. It is strongly recommended
that students keep a copy of all work submitted.
It is the student’s responsibility to schedule
your exam at The QUEST Centre.
‘Certificates of Completion’ are
issued upon completion of the course by the marker. It is
the student’s responsibility to have the information
transferred to their transcript. Keeping the Certificates
along with the original transcript is also acceptable for
job application or entering the post-secondary education.
