WINTER DRIVING TIPS

The Elgin County OPP are reminding all motorists that as the weather changes, so must driving habits. Firstly, before starting out ensure that your vehicle is in good working order so that you minimize the chances of being stranded somewhere. Following a few simple steps can help you reach your destination safely.

- Reduce your speed and allow extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you.

- Remove built up snow deposits from the wheel wells to avoid interference with steering

·Clear all snow, ice, frost and fog from both the inside and outside of your vehicle before starting out

·Allow adequate time to reach your destination so that you are not tempted to drive faster

·Be patient with other drivers

·Minimize talking on cell phones and socializing, both of which increase driver distraction

·Remember to slow down substantially when there is any snow, slush or ice on the roads

·Let someone know the route you will be traveling and expected time of arrival.

·In the event of severe winter driving conditions, the Ministry of Transportation advises drivers to stay off the road unless your trip is absolutely necessary.
